If you’ve been around this sub for a few months, then you probably noticed how posts usually have a massive number of comments despite having only a measly number of upvotes.
The large volume of comments can be explained by people wanting to earn karma which is perfectly fine. More karma = you get a bigger slice of the moon pie at the end of the month.
But the tragedy is when people think “Wait, if I upvote other people and give them karma, does that mean I’ll get less moons in the next distribution?”
No.
You can upvote every single post made in a month in this sub + several thousand comments before you lose out on even 1 moon!
Let’s do the maths as proof.
First, here’s the latest info based on the distribution this January 2022:
You get 0.277 moons for every 1 point of karma Total karma for everyone was 5,295,672 43,591 people had at least 1 karma Average moons earned was 33.65 (1466901/43591)
If we decrease the average moons per user to 32.65 (in other words give everyone 1 moon less), the moon-to-karma ratio needs to go down to 0.268.
But to achieve this lower ratio, the total karma needs to increase from 5,295,672 to 5,310,619.
This means you can upvote 14,947 times in a single month before you lose a SINGLE moon.
That’s literally more “free” upvotes than there are posts in this sub
There are only 10,150 posts created here per month (based on the last 24 hours). You can upvote every single one of them and still have 5000 upvotes for comments.
TLDR
Trying to influence moon distribution by manipulating upvotes is pointless. This only discourages people who take time to make quality and original content.
If you’re sick of seeing 20+ selfposts everyday about “Embracing the dip” and “This is a crash” followed by “This is not a crash”, then upvote the posts you want to see more of instead.
