So something that crossed my mind today is the delay in communication in space. Like lets say you are on the moon living there full time, and want to do something with crypto. There is a 2.5 second delay in communication on the near side. But likely, when we become a space society we will be all over the solar system. So when we look at just a phone call between here and mars. The delay will be about 3 minutes to 21 minutes depending on where it is in it’s orbit.
Meaning for you get something that’s 21 + you sign the smart contract and send it back another 21 + you getting a confirmation another 21 minutes = 63 minutes in doing something that takes seconds down here on Earth.
My point is this, it is extremely likely gas fees will be changed before you even are told what the gas fees are. And it comes down to luck when making a simple transaction or not. And you’re looking at about an hour to just see if you need to try again.
I wonder how this can be solved. Because while a society on the moon or space stations around Earth or the moon should be fine. On the far side of the moon it’s about 5 seconds. When you go much beyond that, I think crypto in the current form simply won’t work. At least until we figure out how to make a quantum internet actually work. Assuming it is even possible to have a quantum entangled internet
(There is a thing in science called quantum entanglement. In short, basically 2 particles are linked to each other. In theory there is no limit to the distance on the link. When you change 1 particle it changes the other in a predictable way. When you observe it, this also changes it which makes it extremely secure. And in labs and even using space stations we found it is a faster than light communication between the particles (as far as we can tell, the change is instant). The theory is each particle can be a 1 or 0. Meaning if you have an extremely large amount you basically can send large data using this. Therefore you just made the quantum internet.
The problem is, making this work even with 1 particle at a time is extremely hard. And keeping it stable requires extremely cold temp, the tech used to observe this is extremely large, etc. More than less we need a far better understanding on material science since we need a stable and extremely cheap way to keep the temp down but in a way you could in theory have this in a phone and it doesn’t damage the phone or your hand. And it has to fit inside of a phone.
BTW I did a lot about this and can talk your ear off about it. I did an entire research paper on this for one of my degrees and part of it I designed a theory how routing information and ISP place in the quantum age. And the knowledge of this isn’t hidden, even PBS has videos on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N-2Sx-FDQA it’s just again our current understanding of material science is slowing us down on this and hopefully AI will help fill in the gap. Oh and for those wondering about the how it works. The simple answer is we don’t know. Like where time comes from, why is there more gravity than mathematically there should be based on our current understanding, etc. We don’t know and it is likely we never will know.)
IDK if this will ever be possible. And I’m assuming we we be a space society before we figure this out.
So my question here is, does anyone have a theory how crypto could survive when we move into a space society? Do you think we will have quantum internet by then, and why do you think that if you say yes?
