Ok, so as a gamer and a crypto enthusiast, I would like to see something merge and actually be awesome, but as I see it, it can only happen, if the devs can hit the following:
1) The game has to be designed to be a badass game in the first place. Most of the current crypto games just seem like work, and then the value of whatever their token is just degrades over time.
The all start with money and blockchain first and bag pumping, but if you are going to get any kind of mass appeal, the game has to be built on first principles that a game must be awesome.
For example, if you can make something like The Witcher, people are going to play it and its going to get awards.
2) The crypto element, IMO needs to almost be snuck in there and should be purely an optional thing, kind of like Reddit avatars.
You can’t have a game that is broken because people who pay can win more. Like in Axie for example, the people that got the best Axis first had a massive advantage, and it became stupid.
A good crypto game should have the crypto element as something people don’t even know that is crypto – maybe just a way to swap and trade skins, cosmetics etc.
Maybe cosmetics is the safest way because if you start selling resources, you can also break the game, the same as if you just let someone buy them. Defeats the whole purpose.
Of course, devs would rather just have you buy a skin and they get paid, they couldn’t give a shit about blockchain. I would love to be able to earn something hard or rare in-game and have the opportunity to sell it on chain, but I can also see why a dev would just be like, pay me the money instead.
It would have to be done in a way that the devs are getting a decent percentage on each resell of a skin and some application.
Maybe it could be an element from a minigame as part of the main game or something. Maybe it could be something used in profiles for the game’s subreddits or communities etc.
I’m not sure if this is even possible tbh, but I would imagine it to be something like this. Maybe Nintendo could get away with some nfts in Pokemon or do a separate thing with it, they’re not exactly great at that kind of innovation though.
Some of the main hurdles are, firstly, just making a good game is expensive and hard enough, let alone with a crypto element on top.
The media and a lot of people HATE crypto and as soon as a game even uses the word nft, people get pissed and start calling to boycott the whole thing. Same with how a lot of people hate people that some people even use reddit nfts. There’s a strange amount of charged emotion around the whole thing.
Finally, there could be issues with people like the SEC deciding that your token is a security and that they will ruin everything, as they usually do.
So honestly, I’m not even sure if it’s possible to make a truly mainstream crypto game that isn’t just another vapid cash grab.
