There’s a lot of things I still don’t see much real utility for in crypto. I like gaming, but have never found a blockchain game I’ve enjoyed. NFTs seem to have vastly more potential than just images and collectibles but I don’t think they’re used to their full potential yet.
There’s been a few things I’ve tried that have been instant ‘aha’ moments though.
An early one was just transferring bitcoin – it’s easy to understand what permissionless means when you can create wallets, transfer coins around and just do whatever you want with the coins and access the network. No logins, no paperwork, no intermediaries. That was a long time ago.
I had trouble seeing how just bitcoin would ever replace banks. Using Compound years ago was a huge eye-opener. I don’t use Compound anymore, but it was the first borrowing and lending protocol I tried. That instantly showed that crypto could do a lot more than just be peer-to-peer transactions: it could actually replace most of what banks do at a fraction of the cost.
Decentralized indexing and querying was a big one – the possibility for huge amounts of data to be open and accessible, permissionlessly is potentially huge. But the protocols that are doing that right now still have a long way to go.
What moments have made you instantly realize: “Wow, this is a game-changer”?
