We tend to make things complicated in our lives. I saw a post the other day that said “focus on the lag metric”. It was a well done article, but it also made me think about our lives. The examples were; if you want to be a writer, write 1 page a day. Then it’ll be a habit to write a book. It had some interesting statistics about how when we fantasize, we get a dopamine release, making it harder and not easier to accomplish those goals.

That made me think-how often do I personally think about those fantasies-being at the end goal instead of taking it one day at a time and putting the work in? I probably do it a lot more than I want to admit. I have my goals written out, and I go back and address what’s working and what’s not. But I also sit there and have those lofty goals hanging over my head, instead of the one day-one hour at a time approach. Sometimes it’s good to go macro and focus and what will work, or even just work. Take the big picture out and focus on doing what needs to be done. Often times, when I think back, that’s what really makes the big picture get finished. Don’t think about having six pack abs-go and do some sit-ups. Don’t think about the album being successful-go and write or record.

So take a moment, and think about the work that needs to be done-one foot in front of the other, and before you know it, you’ll BE done. That’s not logic or anything else that’s immutable, but sometimes we get so focused on the finished product, we forget the iceberg underneath.
