I built this shelf to match a Restoration Hardware dresser that we have. My wife is a designer and wanted a shelf that matched to tie in accents of the room together.

So, after taking a good look at the dresser, I went off to the hardware store in search of some oak. I built this shelf out of red oak, obviously, but you could probably build it out of anything. It’s pretty simple, a box design, with some ogee molding surrounding the top edge. I left a fraction of the top edge showing to match the Restoration Hardware dresser and give it a similar feel. I also used oak so that the grain would show through and match the grain on the dresser.

The paint was actually the hardest part of the build. RH doesn’t sell paint kits, and it took me around 3-4 tries to match the overall color to an acceptable grey-green. The secret is: Benjamin Moore paint, color HC-103, Cromwell Grey. I know there’s probably a bit more added to the mix, they darken and heighten the grain a little bit more than I did. Probably a rougher cut-BUT I do know that they use MDF and veneer on their large pieces from having to drill a large hole in a piece. And those are heavy even if they’re not real wood.
