I watched the movie “The Creator” last night. The story was a little lackluster, a neo-matrix messiah deal with AI and humanity that left me with a few questions more than answers. Not that it sucked or anything, but I would have preferred some different world building scenarios that might have explained some of the choices the characters made better. I did appreciate some of the unexplained scenarios that reminded me of older movies that did LESS explaining and more audience interaction in that way. I don’t think we do enough of that today. A solid middle of the road sci fi is how I would put it. I do like Denzel’s kid too, I think he’s a decent actor.
One of the big things that I was interested in seeing was the fact that it was supposedly shot on a Sony FX3 camera. For those that don’t know, it’s a “prosumer” camera, meaning that it’s relatively cheap enough ($5k) for a normal person to get their hands on and start shooting. Of course you need a lens that’s just as good, but even so, shooting a movie on a $10-15k camera rig/budget is typically looked at as an indie film or less. This movie looked pretty good, maybe a tad dark for my taste, but well enough that I would have less complaints that it’s shot on a Arri vs Red vs Blackmagic, etc. The fact that it was a sci fi movie meant lots of plates and green screen and plenty of effects work and that was also handled very well by the camera range. Of course there was a few scenes that could have been better, but for what they accomplished on the tech, I am impressed or at least excited that it’s possible.
Not that I have an $80 million dollar sci fi movie idea, but it excites me to think I could. I’ll just spend the next 20 years trying to think of something.
