I’m a nerd. That’s obvious.

But I love reading and learning about things that I use or do, mostly because it’s interesting to think of the history behind it. While perusing the local bookstore, I came across a book on Sodas. I do happen to have a crippling Soda addiction, so I figured I would take a second to learn about the Sodas. It did not disappoint.

The most interesting thing to me was the aspect of how Sodas originated. If you’re angry that I’m saying Soda vs Pop, I’m not changing it, so keep being mad. Sodas began at the pharmacy-which was an interesting place where they were excited to do cocaine!

All jokes aside, they made their own perfumes, concoctions, tonics, mixers, etc. And that’s where the Soda began. A live custom blend of “healthy” waters, infused with bubbles, tonics, flavorings, and eventually sugar.

I wonder how those same pharmacists would react knowing that their concoctions are the exact opposite of the origins. Or maybe they didn’t care in the first place. Who knows? Either way. I’m less attracted to Pepsi now knowing that it came from the greek word for “Pepsis” as a stomach cure. That’s like drinking carbonated Pepto-Bismal and MAYBE it’ll help me kick the habit.

I still do like the concept of the Soda Jerk, however, and I feel like we should be bringing those back. Classic, sleek, smooth, and nifty. Maybe someday when I’m fabulously wealthy I’ll bring some back just because I feel that’s the way the world should be.

Oh, and don’t forget that A&W was the McDonald’s before McDonald’s all based on Root Beer. And the Root Beer float.

Here’s a link to the book, it’s somewhat local so support this dude.
