I sound so old…
But, with everyone complaining about the new Mac Pros, I had to add my story. When I started PM Studios, WAAAYYY back in 2005, I bought a new mac pro, screen, cameras, etc. It cost me 10 large, which I was able to finance with a small business loan. I apparently had the ability to convince someone to give me 20k at 19 years old. Amazing.
Anyway, the point is that for professionals, for a good machine, 5k isn’t really that bad. For people who render, and edit in 4k/high quality work, it’s great if it can do it faster. And 15 years ago, it’s about the same price. My machine was around 3-4k, which adjusted for inflation, might be close to the same price.
I can’t speak for the stand, however. It may be a great stand. I wouldn’t spend that much on a stand, let alone a monitor. The machines I work on now work incredibly well, using off the shelf parts. Unfortunately, Apple lost me as a pro customer when they went to FCPX. I know X has made a come back, but I’ve already switched, and I’m happy with the ability to edit on any windows machine with almost any hardware. I used mostly Adobe anyway, and now I keep the software in the same suite. I still use FCP occasionally, but I’m no longer the power user I once was.
Long story, new tech is expensive for pros, it’s still probably good, and if you need it, you’ll buy it. Everyone else can drool and complain…
